Concerned about air quality? You should be. There are a number of situations in which maintaining clean air is incredibly important such as in construction sites, during site restoration after a devastating fire or flood, mold remediation and sanitation. When air is not purified in these processes there is exposure to dust, mold spores, smoke particles, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and various other harmful substances which can lead to a variety of health issues. Fortunately, there are many air purification systems available to target these compounds.The Thermodynamic Sterilisation System (TSS) is one of these technologies that is very effective in destroying VOCs in particular. Essentially, it works by taking air into a ceramic core that is heated to 392 degrees (F); this is subsequently hot enough to destroy 99.9% of microbiological particles including harmful bacteria and viruses. Although you may be concerned that such an intensive system must come with some downsides you can be rest assured that there are no harmful by-products from this air purification system. In fact, TSS actually reduces ozone in the atmosphere so by using it you are not only making the air safer to breathe for sanitation, you are literally fighting global warming. Another air purification system that similarly targets micro-organisms is Ultraviolet Germicidal irradiation (UVGI). This method works by simply using a fan to force air to pass past UV lamps. This UV light kills off micro-organisms, that need to be removed, however problems arise when there are areas hidden from this light. Cooling systems are particularly afflicted with micro bacteria because they are so damp, but if you place a UV lamp at the coils and drain pan of the cooling system it should effectively prevent this. However, bear in mind that using in-line duct systems are more effective as they are directly centred in the air duct and run parallel to the air flow.A more extreme method of purifying the air is by using an ozone generator. Ozone generators produce large amounts of oxidant gas that are able to oxidise strong chemicals. This is used a lot in site restoration to remove the smell of smoke after fire and damp smells after flooding but it can also be used to remove mold. However, the air produced by ozone generators is harmful to humans so adequate caution should be taken when used.Finally, Hydroxyl Generators are probably the most advanced and environmentally friendly air purification systems. Hydroxyls are natural molecules that are essentially mother nature’s own way of cleaning up the atmosphere and these generators use UV technology, similar to UVGI, that recreates the natural process that creates these magical molecules to eradicate contaminents.
