Turkey should have hosted the Queen under better circumstances

The Queen is here and once again Turks face the prospects of political turmoil with the closure case of the AK party. Those who are behind the plot against the AK party and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan should see the great harm they are doing to the vital interests of our country.

Queen Elizabeth II is back in Ankara for a state visit 37 years after her last trip here.

It is sad that every time the Queen visits Turkey she finds us in the midst of a political crisis.

After her 1971 visit the government of Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel was toppled by a "coup by communiqué" issued by the military…

This time the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party faces a closure case at the Constitutional Court which had very serious implications for political stability in Turkey. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan may very well lose his seat and even the seat iof President Abdullah Gul who is currently hosting the Queen may be in jeopardy.

The Queen is here in Turkey with a clear message: Turkey is a vital strategic link for Britain and the European Union.

Britain has staunchly defended Turkey's membership in the EU and has always underlined the growing importance of Turkey for the security of the West.

But all this is of course subject to the extent we can sustain the current political, economic and social stability that has been achieved in the past six years under the rule of the Erdogan administration. The more Turkey emerges as a power in its region and plays an active role to promote peace and stability in its area the more the West will embrace our country.

But now we see a new situation where Turkey is being dragged into political uncertainty which is a great shame.

It is clear that some forces are trying to closedown the AK Party and thus ban Prime Minister Erdogan. They do not realize the consequences of the actions.

But even the sad situation created during the visit of the Queen should be enough to bring these people to their sense. But it seems we are whistling in the wind.

The right of free communications does not exist in Turkey

The widespread eavesdropping cases that are being reveled in Turkey everyday shows there is a serious problem that has to be addressed b y the government and the state institutions. This does not fit a country that aims to join the European Union.
