Turkey's global image is being hurt

The latest court case for the closure of the ruling party of Turkey and the violent scenes from Istanbul on May Day are creating a very negative image about Turkey and wiping all the good things that have been done in the past five years.

The latest events in Turkey are hurting the positive image that has been created about our country in the past five years.

The domestic stability and economic growth that has come with the Justice and Development (AK) Party government since 2002 seems to be seriously threatened by the recent events led by the court case at the constitutional court to closedown the party.

The international community is finding it hard to comprehend how the ruling party of a country can even be threatened with closure due to political reasons.

The May Day celebrations which were marred with violence has also created a very adverse affect on the global image of Turkey.

The international media has been full of scenes of the violent events in Istanbul where police where shown beating up protestors. The battle scenes and stones flying in the air have covered the front pages of many newspapers abroad.

Now people are starting to say Turkey has not made any advances in human rights judging from the events on May Day.

This is a gross injustice. Turkey does not deserve this negative image. The government which has struggled to wipe out the negative attitudes of the past does not deserve this.

The incompetent people around Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan seem to be misleading him and thus allowing him to make errors.

His is sad because the prime minister has made every effort to change things in Turjey for the better.

Turkey has to do some soul searching. The government has to realize that the human rights record of Turkey cannot be improved just by legislating laws. You have to implement them properly and also punish officials who are reluctant to do so. Turks have to learn to accept the basic rights of the individual as a vital requirement like bread and water.

Meanwhile, Turks have to realize also that pushing for the closure of a political party which has not been involved in violence is something alien to the civilized world.

PKK is fighting back but without Iraqi Kurdish backing

The rapprochement between Ankara and the Iraqi Kurds seems to have clipped the wins of the PKK terrorist organization. The PKK is still trying to show it will prevail but they have to realize that this is now a losing game.
